Questions to think about before designing your dream home:

One of the most important considerations is setting a budget and balancing it with needs and wants.

Here are some basic budget items.
Land
Site Work
Construction
Landscaping

How will you use your new home?
Seasonal
Full Time
Do you like to entertain?

How much space will you need and how do you want it configured?
Number of bedrooms and bathrooms?
Do you want a master bedroom suite on the first floor?
Do you feel it’s important to have all of the bedrooms on one floor?
Do you want a separate dining area?
Great Room
Family Room
Spa/Hot Tub Area
Office Space
Garage Space
Finished Basement (future or at time of new construction)

What type of spaces would you like to create?
Wide open flowing space
Intimate & private closed space

What look and feel you would like to achieve?
Rough sawn timbers with a natural finish will give a rustic look
Planed & sanded timbers with an oil finish will give an elegant look
Think about ceiling height.  A nine or ten foot ceiling can add a much greater feeling of volume to a room.

If you have an existing lot or are shopping for a new lot here are some site considerations.
Where are the views? Good home designs will exploit the views by opening them up to the most frequently used rooms and by use of properly sized and arranged windows and doors.
From an energy perspective more frequently used rooms are also designed to face the solar south to take full advantage of the maximum amount of solar heat.
Proper balance of siting your new home (locating it on your land) will allow you to take maximum advantage of the synergies between your new house and what the land has to offer.
Not to worry, you are not alone.  We can help you with properly locating your new home by working with input from you and the architect.
